Community Service
All students at Rock Point School participate in Service Days as part of our academic and dormitory curriculum. We have a lot of fun working together, and for some students this is a favorite part of their time at Rock Point. In addition to the 6-8 planned Service Days, motivated students have opportunities to do other community service work, both at the school and in the local community.
Different ways that students participate in community service:
• Help around the school
There are many ways that students will be able to help out around the school, including giving school tours, supervising a work crew, or facilitating a school-wide or boys'/girls' floor meeting.
• Help around the Rock Point property
Students have volunteered to help out on the Rock Point property by working to maintain trails, planting and caring for gardens, clearing brush, and mowing lawns, among other things.
• Help out local non-profit groups
Students have worked with local organizations such as C.O.T.S. (Committee On Temporary Shelter, an organization assisting the homeless), the Peace and Justice Center, McClure Multi-Generational Center, and Very Special Arts.
Students have created the Ooky Spooky Race, an annual Halloween 5K race, that raises money for C.O.T.S. Students recently participated in the Hike for Hunger, raising over $750. Generally, staff, as well as students, create a list of many organizations that could use our help. Specific opportunities are announced and posted as they arise.
• Participate in short and/or long trips.
In the past, students helped the Green Mountain Club, staining and prepping a cabin on Camel's Hump for winter. They have also helped with trail maintenance.
Students have also participated in international trips. Three years ago a group went to Honduras. For the past two years a group has gone to El Salvador. These trips were run by an organization called Episcopal Relief and Development. Seven students and three staff members joined a larger group of adults and teens who were involved with the Relief and Development organization through local Episcopal parishes. This is a wonderful opportunity for students to be involved in service and to connect with people from a different culture. (There is an additional expense to go on international trips
