Ah! The Fresh Smell of Woodsmoke!
Boiling sap in the RPS Sugar House requires constant attention so that the level of sap does not drop too low causing the pan to boil dry. Someone must be in the vicinity of the sugar house at all times. A human presence is also useful when this phrase comes out of a student's mouth, "Ummm...I think the ceiling's on fire." Bring on the fire extinguishers and the quick thinking of Captain Maple to quell the minor fire incident. A vat of syrup was sacrificed but the sugar house remains fully intact, just a little crispy around the chimney. It's a constant learning experience this maple syrup making venture.
