Maple Sugaring has begun
Any visitor to Rock Point School this morning would have seen a plume of white aromatic smoke rising from the Sugar House behind the school building. The sap began to run this weekend due to the warmer temperatures and the buckets began to fill up. The students and staff collected sap yesterday and the boiling started today. The sap must boil to 219 degrees fahrenheit before it can be cooled off and used as syrup. It is important to keep an eye on the boiling pan so that the level of sap does not slip below 1.5inches which might cause the sap to burn. (Certain students had some direct experience of this earlier today!) The first syrup should be on the RPS dining table this weekend. Later this week the students will host local preschoolers and after school groups around the maple sugaring program.
Make sure to join us for the Maple Brunch on April 2nd at 10am in the RPS dining room to enjoy some maple treats. Check our events listing for more information.
