Solar Panels Up and Running

Kathy shows Bishop Tom Ely how to read the meter on one of the solar panels.

At the very end of 2011, all the wires were in place, connections made and switches switched to bring the Rock Point solar farm to life. The panels wake in the morning and turn to the south, they then track through the day, following the path of the sun via GPS programming.  The power produced feeds right into the grid and is processed by Burlington Electric Department.  This will be reflected on our electricity bills when they arrive this month.

In the Spring, the senior class will run an educational program involving local elementary school children to teach the basics of solar energy during field trips to Rock Point. In the mean time, the students are analyzing the power produced by the panels against the power used by various buildings on the property.  Each panel has its' own meter so we can see at any time how much power is being generated.  This is a great example of real life education.

Stay tuned for more news about this exciting project.
